This is a great opportunity to showcase the science of a something being hydrophobic. I included Sponge Bob Squarepants figurines in our set up, but feel free to switch that up, or simply focus on the hydrophobic sand by itself. The spray coating will eventually wear off.
Now here is another recipe for making magic sand, but this time you will replace the fine sand with flour. You can use toys for the magic sand that you would also use on the beach – a small rake, molds and a shovel, for example. You can also provide your children with cookie cutters. Spatulas or harmless and blunt plastic knives are perfect for cutting the sand (only under supervision!). Otherwise, creativity is all that is required and, as is well known, children have enough of that. Let the children play with toy animals in the sand or build whole sandcastles.

Once it is dry use your hand to spread it around and mix it up. We want a whole new layer of sand to coat. Once you’ve smoothed it out completely, it’s time to apply another even coat of Scotch Gard. After dries you’ll need to repeat this process five or six times.
Have them be your science assistant and practice skills of measuring, pouring, and mixing. Not only will they gain confidence by making something for themselves, but you’ll feel proud watching it unfold. Place the clean sand in a small pan or bowl. After that, spray the surface of the sand evenly with the waterproofing chemical. You would need to shake the container of sand to expose untreated surfaces.
How to Make Kinetic Sand
It's best to take this step slow and mix the sand with the solution as you go—you will not need to use all the solution you made. Use as much sand as you'd like to play with. It's important that the sand is kept dry.
Keep in mind that powdered tempera paint will give you a brighter color. When the kids get tired of the Play-Doh and want something a little more "exciting," it's time to pull out the moon sand and wow them. Instead of buying the commercially made moon sand, try making your own at home. Water repellent sand was made long before toy makers marketed Magic Sand. Early in the 20th century, Magic Sand was made by heating together sand and wax.
Step 1: Get a Flat Pan
To give your moon sand a scent, consider adding in a few drops of baking extract, such as lemon or vanilla. You can also add spices to your sand later on instead. If the sand is damp, spread it on a baking sheet, and bake in the oven for 30 minutes at 120 degrees F. Make sure the sand has cooled before pouring it into the mixing bowl.
Store it in the fridge after you’ve made it, and try to use it up within a week or two after brewing. No two people metabolize shrooms in the same way, even if they’ve taken the same dose at the same time. While dried shrooms can last for months if stored properly, the liquid aspect of tea cuts its shelf life considerably. Some people keep it for longer, but we can’t guarantee it will keep. The shelf life of shrooms and shroom tea is up for debate. For best results, treat your shroom tea like a beverage you got from your local grocery store.

Wait 15 minutes to let the Scotchgard protector completely dry. Once it is dry use your fingers and stir and mix the sand. The idea here is to expose any grains of sand that did not get coated in step 5.

But my kids favorite kinetic sand recipe just uses colorful sand, cornstarch , and oil. I used pre-colored sand for this to save some time, but you don’t even need any color at all to enjoy the magic of hydrophobic sand. However, whether you used colored sand or not, make sure you use a sand that is coarse.
For this reason you shouldn’t wait any longer and start making magic sand yourself for your children. We’ll show you a super easy and quick magic sand recipe with flour and one with real sand. To make kinetic sand, start by adding 1 1/2 cups of water to a large bowl. Then, stir 3 cups of cornstarch into the water until there are no more lumps. You can also add a few teaspoons of glitter to make your sand sparkly, or a few teaspoons of powdered drink mix to change the color.
Making your own magic sand is one thing, but what’s the best thing to do with it when the fun is over? You can then simply seal it airtight in a container and store it. However, since homemade kinetic sand does not contain any preservatives and food is used to make it, it will only keep for a few days. So after a certain period of time, you’d better dispose of it and prepare new one. Those who like plasticine , and we are sure that everyone does, will virtually fall in love with the magic sand plasticine.
Water tension is what holds the aqua sand together. If the epoxy resin is water based, it will not hold the sand together. Make a mold of the design and use the mold to hold the sand and epoxy combination.
Sand from the beach or playground isn't always very clean. All you need to do is coat the sand with a waterproofing chemical. Just gather clean sand and a waterproofing spray like Scotchguard.
